Laboratory of Population Genetics


Established in 1982. Headed by Professor Valery Pavlovich Puzyrev, Academician of RAMS.

Laboratory of Population Genetics was the first laboratory in the Institute, which gave start to its further development.

Main research fields:

  • Genetics of complex disorders and quantitative traits, functional genomics;
  • Genogeography of Siberian populations.

  •  Main results:

    • Structure of the gene pool of different ethnic groups of Siberia and its adjacent territories has been characterized with a wide range of marker systems: classical markers (blood groups, erythrocytic and serum proteins and enzymes); quasi-genetic markers (surnames); mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA); polymorphisms in common diseases candidate genes.
    • Peculiarities of genetic and demographic processes have been studied in Siberian populations of different ethnic origin and adjacent regions (Khanty, Tuvinians, Altaians, Buryats, Yakuts, Kirghizs, Tajiks, urban and rural population of the Tomsk Region and others).

    • Important mechanisms of evolution of genetic markers and quantative traits which are pathogenetically significant for complex disorders have been studied in the indigenous and newly arrived populations of Siberia.

    Functional and predictive importance of polymorphisms in candidate genes has been assessed for such diseases as hypertension and its complications, coronary atherosclerosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, pathology of heart conducting system, bronchial asthma, infectious diseases, diabetes mellitus, gestosis, lungs chronic obstructive disease, and others. 


    Technical approaches in the Laboratory are constantly developed. Having started from the study of classic marker systems in 80th, scientists are currently deal with modern molecular methods of human genome study.


    The Laboratory has equipment for PCR–RFLP analysis, as well as for screening mutations using SSCP, heteroduplex analysis, Real Time PCR, DNA sequencing. 


    Genetics of longevity, obesity, multiple sclerosis (MS), type 2 diabetes, viral hepatitides, tick-borne encephalitis, and lyme disease (borreliosis), arterial hypertension and its complications, heart remodeling, susceptibility to tuberculosis, bronchial asthma, and atopic dermatitis are currently under study.

    Genes of renin-angiotensin system, calcineurin pathway, cytokines, mtDNA, and other genome loci are under investigation.

    Scientific expeditions were organized by the laboratory staff to many Siberian regions, which allowed them to collect DNA bank of representatives of the indigenous and newly arrived populations with the total number of more than 3000 samples.

    DNA samples’ from patients with various complex disorders are collected in the laboratory, and constantly enlarge.

    Research results of the Laboratory are applied in medical practice: panels of genetic markers have been produced to provide with services in genome diagnostics to common diseases as essential hypertension, myocardial hypertrophy, bronchial asthma, venous thromboses, etc.
