Genetic testing for common diseases has become one of the most controversial topics present in the recent genetics literature. Many genetic tests are becoming available direct-to-consumers before critical medical implications have been widely considered. High level of public interest as well as overestimated expectations is one of factors that determine the rapid development of personal genome services. In a Russian urban population, 85% of 2000 respondents answered positively to a question about their own willingness to undergo predictive genetic testing for preventable health conditions and 88.5% of surveyed people said that they would change their life style in case of high risk detection. But the genetic discrimination causes some concerns in 48% of surveyed respondents. Gender, age and health status significantly influenced response. The most important reason to be tested is a concern about health but refuse to be tested is connected with the difficulty to pay for it and after treatment. more...

Our congratulations to Dmitriy Sergeevich Orlov, the student of the cytogenetics laboratory of the Institute, for the third degree Diploma at the 5th International Pirogov scientific medical conference of students and young scientists held on March 18, 2010 in Moscow. His report was devoted to “Epimutations of the imprinted gene PLAGL1 in early prenatal death of human embryos and their connection to obstetric anamnesis history” (scientific advisor PhD Sazhenova E.A.).
